Trivia: The 11-foot Enterprise model could be filmed only from the ship's starboard (right) side. Rare views such as this one were achieved using mirrored decals (for the NCC-1701 on the saucer underside in this view), then flipping the film to achieve a port-side (left-side) angle. This image also contains a mild "blooper," in that the wiring for lighting the model can be seen slightly protruding near the top left of the image where the support pylon joins the engine nacelle.

A New Take On The Classic U.S.S. Enterprise

In the summer of 2006, CBS Digital embarked on the project of digitally remastering Star Trek (the original series) for High Definition. A decision was quickly made to digitally re-create all special effects scenes as a part of the project, mainly because the original effects sequences were simply too grainy to be presented in HD. One of the primary aspects of the new special effects sequences was a new, CGI model of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and to the credit of CBS Digital, the end result was a stunningly accurate re-creation of the original model.

The first eight episodes remastered..."Balance of Terror," "Miri," "The Devil in the Dark," "The Naked Time," "The City on the Edge of Forever," "I, Mudd," "Arena" and "Catspaw"...featured a first attempt at a Enterprise CGI model that while impressive, was somewhat lacking. Below are a few images of this first attempt:

A revised, and greatly improved CGI rendering of the Enterprise debuted in the ninth episode remastered, "The Trouble With Tribbles." Using this model, the CBS Digital team over nearly a two year period digitally re-created the space scenes in the remaining episodes, matching the original shots in many episodes, but using alternate vantage points of the model in many cases, and in some instances, providing never-before-seen views, including extreme closeups, as well as beautiful shots of shuttlecraft entering and exiting the hangar deck.

Below are several views of the Enterprise CGI model as it appeared in most remastered episodes in the series:

Enterprise, which was featured as one of five Star Trek bridges on the 1997 Simon & Schuster CD-ROM "Captain's Chair." The Interactive CD-ROM was co-produced by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda, and the renderings of the original Enterprise bridge were done by Jay Roth and Electric Image.
