Northern Exposure debuted in the summer of 1990 as a "replacement" series, and after developing a sizeable and faithful following, soon became a regular staple of CBS's Monday night lineup. Created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey, Northern Exposure chronicled the plight of the New York-bred Joel Fleischman (played by Rob Morrow), a medical intern forced to repay his scholarship by serving for four years as general practitioner in the remote town of Cicely, Alaska.
Over the course of the series' 110 episodes, Dr. Fleischman evolved from contempt to tolerance of the unfamiliar lifestyle of Cicely and its quirky, eccentric residents, while coping with an unpredictable and volatile relationship/rivalry with courier-pilot Maggie O'Connell (played by co-star Janine Turner). In the final season, Joel at last seemingly embraced the philosophy of Cicely and, for a time, attempted to retreat even further from modern-day society. In the end, however, New York City beckoned and Joel returned, leaving Cicely behind. The series did not survive Rob Morrow's departure and CBS's subsequent neglect and, to the dismay of loyal followers, was cancelled at the end of the 1994-95 season.
