Lynchburg Union Station
Built in 1890, Lynchburg Union Station served railroad
passengers for seventy-five years, undergoing a variety
of cosmetic changes until its demolition in 1965.

Court St. View Looking South
The Lynchburg Court House and neighboring First Presbyterian Church
can be seen in the background in this early 1900's view of the
cobblestoned Court St.
Court House Steps & Firemens Memorial Fountain
The fountain, built in 1883, was relocated to Miller Park in 1924, where in
1954 it was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel (a replica was unveiled in 1976).
At the foot of the steps today stands the sculpture "The Listening Post,"
featuring a World War I "doughboy" (seen on the main Lynchburg page).
Rivermont Bridge and Trolley
The bridge shown above was built in 1890, linking downtown
Lynchburg with the suburb of Rivermont. The bridge was
encased in concrete in 1925, and replaced entirely in 1972.
Lynchburg National Bank
The Lynchburg National Bank building was constructed
in 1915-16, and still stands today.

Amherst Bridge & Union Depot
Concrete pilings in the James River are all that remain today of
this 1878 bridge and its predecessors. Until the 1919 completion
of the Williams Viaduct a few blocks west, this bridge at 9th St.
was the sole connector between Lynchburg and Amherst County.
The "Casino" at Rivermont Park
The Casino was a summer vaudeville theater, whose performances
were coordinated with those of Lynchburg's Academy of Music.
The building was torn down in the 1920's.
College Hill Reservoir
Built in 1877, College Hill Reservoir became the centerpiece
of College Park, and supplemented the older reservoir on Clay St..
The College Hill Reservoir is still in service, but has been covered
with a metal dome.
Westover Hotel
In 1903, the Westover Hotel was converted to use by the newly
founded Virginia Christian College, later renamed Lynchburg College.
Deemed a fire hazard, this building was demolished in 1970.
Court House and First Presbyterian Church
These two buildings, from 1853 and 1899 respectively,
remain in use today. The former court house is now home to the Lynchburg
Museum, and the church building is owned by the city.
Six Mile Bridge
This bridge over the James River, part of the original Norfolk and
Western mainline, stands unused today east of Lynchburg.
Rivermont Park
The privately-owned Rivermont Park was replaced in 1922 in part
by the public Riverside Park.

Cabell Street
Cabell Street ran through a once-affluent neighborhood
in the Daniel's Hill area.

Jones Memorial Library
The George M. Jones Memorial Library was built in
1905-08. The building still stands at the foot
of Rivermont Ave., but the library itself has relocated.

Lynchburg Cotton Mill
The building seen in this 1910-postmarked card stands
unused and dilapidated today.
View of First Baptist Church
This 1910 view from Diamond Hill features the back side of the First
Baptist Church, built in 1884-86.
Female Orphan Asylum
The Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum, also known as the Miller
Home, was built in 1870-72. It was demolished in 1959 to clear
land for construction of the Pittman Plaza Shopping Center.

Packet Boat Marshall
One of the many packet boats that travelled the James River and Kanawha Canal,
the Marshall achieved its place in history when in May of 1863, it carried
the body of Stonewall Jackson from the Orange & Alexandria train depot
in Lynchburg to Jackson's hometown, Lexington. Today, a few pitiful
fragments of the Marshall's hull are on display at Riverside Park.

Rivermont Bridge
Constructed across Blackwater Creek in 1890, this bridge
linked the town of Lynchburg with Daniel's Hill. The bridge,
the avenue leading up from it and the suburb itself were all named
after the "Rivermont" house high on Daniel's Hill.
